  • Wash your hands often with soap and water. Bring an alcohol-based hand sanitizer as well.
  • Drink only bottled or boiled water, and drink plenty of it to stay hydrated.
  • Avoid eating food purchased from street vendors.
  • Make sure food is fully cooked. Avoid eating anything that hasn't been peeled, boiled or washed in purified water.
  • Bring with you diarrhea medicine so that you can treat mild cases yourself.
  • Use insect repellent with 30-50% DEET.
  • Try wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants and a hat outdoors to prevent insect bites.
  • Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a bandana.
  • Avoid petting any stray animals or dogs. Rabies shots are not fun.
  • Perform basic stretching exercises.
  • Work at your own pace, take frequent breaks and rotate out of strenuous tasks.
  • Lift with your legs, not with your back.
  • Make sure to get plenty of rest.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and avoid venturing out alone - always use the buddy system.
  • Be mindful of yourself and others and let the leader know when you are starting to feel sick.
  •  Make sure to have fun!
